Via Politico:
Cochran said that party affiliation is a “state of mind” in Mississippi and that “everybody can participate.”
Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr., said that Cochran’s seniority was a major reason that the veteran Republican lawmaker got his support. Flaggs said that he will support Cochran in the general election and that it is important he stays in office so that Mississippi can benefit from his longevity in Congress, particularly since earmarks are gone.
NAACP Mississippi State President Derrick Johnson said in an interview that they are looking for Cochran’s support.
“Two things that we think should come immediately after the election [are] his support of the Voting Rights act… free of any provisions that would allow for voter ID and, second, to get the presidents of the black colleges to ask for his offices for help to make sure the mission of those institutions are carried out,” he said.
Study: There will be a severe shortage of primary care physicians by 2025
Obamacare will just make this worse...
The U.S. is expected to need 52,000 more primary care physicians by 2025, according to a study by the Robert Graham Center, which does family medicine policy research. But funding for teaching hospitals that could train thousands more of these doctors expires in late 2015.
Population growth will drive most of the need for family care doctors, accounting for 33,000 additional physicians, the study says. The aging population will require about 10,000 more. The Affordable Care Act is expected to increase the number of family doctors needed by more than 8,000, the study says.
Farzan Bharucha, a health care strategist with consulting firm Kurt Salmon, says the ACA should have focused more on the primary care shortage "because we already knew there was a problem -- and we knew implementation of ACA would potentially make it worse."

Interesting: Pot legalization is hurting the Mexican drug cartels...
One of the benefits of ending the war on drugs...
Via Vice News:
Via Vice News:
The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that pot farmers in the Sinaloa region have stopped planting due to a massive drop in wholesale prices, from $100 per kilo down to only $25. One farmer is quoted as saying: “It’s not worth it anymore. I wish the Americans would stop with this legalization.”
VICE News talked to retired federal agent Terry Nelson, a former field level commander who worked to prevent drugs from crossing the southern border. Nelson said that before medical marijuana and state legalization in Washington and Colorado, about 10 million pounds of pot were grown in the US every year. But 40 million pounds came from Mexico.
Given the DEA’s relationship with Sinaloa, and the agency’s fury over legalized marijuana, it almost seems like the DEA wants to crush the legal weed market in order to protect the interests of their cartel friends. Almost.
Exact numbers on illegal drug trafficking are always hard to pin down, due to the black market nature of distribution and sales.I guess the cartels could branch out into smuggling illegals across the border. Obama has that business booming.
“Is it hurting the cartels? Yes. The cartels are criminal organizations that were making as much as 35-40 percent of their income from marijuana,” Nelson said, “They aren't able to move as much cannabis inside the US now.”

Obvious: Former HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius: “I sure made some mistakes along the way..."
You think?
Via Politico:
Former Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius acknowledged Friday that she made mistakes leading up to the rollout of the Affordable Care Act, worrying too much about whether there’d be a market for Obamacare and spending “too little time clearly on the technology side.”
“I sure made some mistakes along the way in terms of focusing on some things and not on others,” she said at the Aspen Ideas Festival. Instead of confirming what she was being told about HealthCare.gov’s readiness “was actually accurate and getting enough eyes and ears on that,” she said she concentrated on the insurers, consumers and regulators who needed to come together in the health exchanges.
Sebelius addressed several issues surrounding the health care law during the “conversation” she had publicly with Aspen Institute CEO Walter Isaacson. And she adamantly rejected the possibility that she’d make another run for elective office back in Kansas, where she served more than a decade as a state lawmaker and then governor.

Just another reason I am glad I am only on Twitter. I never could agree to Facebook's privacy policy.
Scientists at Facebook have published a paper showing that they manipulated the content seen by more than 600,000 users in an attempt to determine whether this would affect their emotional state. The paper, “Experimental evidence of massive-scale emotional contagion through social networks,” was published inThe Proceedings Of The National Academy Of Sciences. It shows how Facebook data scientists tweaked the algorithm that determines which posts appear on users’ news feeds—specifically, researchers skewed the number of positive or negative terms seen by randomly selected users. Facebook then analyzed the future postings of those users over the course of a week to see if people responded with increased positivity or negativity of their own, thus answering the question of whether emotional states can be transmitted across a social network. Result: They can!

Lerner's Lawyer admits Lois Lerner did not print and save email records as required by law
Lois Lerner's lawyer claims Lerner didn't now she was required to print email records. Add that to the things about Lois Lerner loosing over two years of email that are hard to believe.
Printing ‘official’ emails — or not.Taylor said Lerner did not print out official records she may have sent over email because she didn't know she had to.Preserving records is required by law...
The Federal Records Act requires agencies to back up all “business” correspondence — anything dealing with policy or operations, for instance. And while the IRS says it’s up to employees to print off hard copies of official emails and file them, Taylor said Lerner did not because she “did not think it was required.”National Archives, which oversees the law, and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration are currently probing the lost emails and the backup policies. The Archivist has already said the IRS did not follow the law because it did not alert them to lost emails that could be important, which is required.

Could there be a connection between climate change and the emerging conflict in Iraq?
The short answer is a qualified yes, according to Frank Femia of the Center for Climate and Security, a Washington-based policy institute advised by senior retired military and national security leaders. He explained in a phone interview:
It’s far too early, considering this is happening in real time, to figure out what is motivating ISIS and its members. Certainly, the natural resource stresses in the region make things worse. Terrorist organizations can try to control those resources and gain significant influence and power. You can’t say climate change is causing ISIS to do what it’s doing, but it [climate change] certainly has a role to play in the region.
EPA planning to spend $1,633,320 on hotel rooms for “Environmental Justice” conference

The agency posted its intention to contract with the Renaissance Arlington Local Capital View Hotel for its upcoming public meeting, for which it will need to book 195 rooms for 24 days.
“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), Office of Enforcement and Compliance, Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ) intends to award a fixed-price Purchase Order … to the Renaissance Arlington Local Capital View Hotel,” the solicitation said. “The purpose of this acquisition is to cover the cost of 195 sleeping room nights from Sept. 9 [to] Oct 2, 2014, at government rate for the 50th public meeting of the National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC), a federal advisory committee of the EPA.”
Rooms at the Renaissance Arlington run for roughly $349 a night. At 24 nights, the cost of 195 rooms will reach $1,633,320, or $8,376 per room.

Unlikely: Hillary Clinton claims she would run on #Obamacare if running in 2014...
Go for it...
Washington (CNN) – Hillary Clinton has yet to announce whether she is running for president in 2016, but in an interview that aired Wednesday, Clinton outlined how she would run in favor of Obamacare “if [she] were a Democrat running for reelection in 2014.”Clinton, who in the past has said she is both supportive of Obamacare and of fixes to change the law, told PBS NewsHour’s Gwen Ifill in an interview taped Tuesday that Democrats “need to” run on President Barack Obama’s sweeping healthcare law.
“If I were a Democrat running for reelection in 2014, I would be posing a very stark choice to the voters of my district, or my state,” Clinton said. “If you want us to go back to the time when your sister with diabetes, or your husband with his heart condition, couldn’t get insurance at an affordable rate, then don’t vote for me, because I think it’s great that your sister and your husband now have insurance.”
Rand Paul on black demos hijacking Mississippi GOP primary: “I’m for more people voting,”
Pandering?
Via WaPo:
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a potential 2016 presidential contender, declined to support tea party critics of Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran’s efforts to mobilize non-GOP voters to win the Republican nomination.
“I’m for more people voting, not less people voting,” Paul told reporters Wednesday.
Paul, an original tea party icon for his 2010 GOP primary win over the establishment, has worked assiduously the past year on broadening his party’s appeal to minority voters, including negotiating with Democrats on efforts to rewrite the Voting Rights Act.
Cochran’s vote total grew by almost 40,000 votes from the initial June 3 primary to Tuesday’s runoff against state Sen. Chris McDaniel (R). Much of that growth has been credited to courting independent and Democratic voters on the state’s Gulf Coast, where shipyard work has been supported by Cochran for decades, and also an aggressive effort to turn out black voters.
In Mississippi all voters can cast ballots in one party’s primary. Paul noted that one of his sons spent time at summer camp working on a proposal that would open up Kentucky’s closed primary system to independent voters.
“I’m for more people voting,” Paul said.

SCOTUS gets one right. Your smartphone is private and requires a warrent.
WASHINGTON —- Cellphones and smartphones generally cannot be searched by police without a warrant during arrests, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously Wednesday in a major victory for privacy rights.
Ruling on two cases from California and Massachusetts, the justices acknowledged both a right to privacy and a need to investigate crimes. But they came down squarely on the side of privacy rights.
"Modern cellphones, as a category, implicate privacy concerns far beyond those implicated by the search of a cigarette pack, a wallet or a purse," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the court.
"We cannot deny that our decision today will have an impact on the ability of law enforcement to combat crime," he said. "Privacy comes at a cost."
Shocker: Lois Lerner tried to get GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley audited...
What a left-wing democratic hack...
Washington, DC – Today, Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) announced the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) targeting of conservative individuals includes a sitting United States Senator. According to emails reviewed by the Committee under its Section 6103 authority, which allows the Committee to review confidential taxpayer information, Lois Lerner sought to have Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) referred for IRS examination.
“We have seen a lot of unbelievable things in this investigation, but the fact that Lois Lerner attempted to initiate an apparently baseless IRS examination against a sitting Republican United States Senator is shocking,” said Camp. “At every turn, Lerner was using the IRS as a tool for political purposes in defiance of taxpayer rights. We may never know the full extent of the abuse since the IRS conveniently lost two years of Lerner emails, not to mention those of other key figures in this scandal. The fact that DOJ refuses to investigate the IRS’s abuses or appoint a special counsel demonstrates, yet again, this Administration’s unwillingness to uphold the rule of law.”

Well, this may explain why democratic women are often ugly.
Via Campus Reform:
A new series of studies from Stanford researchers has found that people who feel “unattractive” are more likely to donate to the Occupy movement.
Professor Margaret Neale and doctoral student Peter Belmi tested perceived concepts of beauty in relation to social hierarchies. The researchers told half of the participants to write about a time when they felt physically attractive or unattractive. The remaining participants wrote about an incident in which they were sensitive or insensitive to the needs of others.
The participants were then asked to rate their own attractiveness and their ability to empathize. Finally, after watching a short video about the Occupy Movement, participants were asked if they would like to donate their compensatory $50 lottery ticket to the movement.
Researchers found that those who perceived themselves to be less attractive were almost twice as likely to donate to Occupy. Those who related memories of self-confidence about their appearance viewed themselves as part of an elite social class and were less likely to donate to social inequality causes.

Poll: 76% think IRS deliberately lost Lois Lerner's email...
Suspicions...
Via Fox News:
The consensus is: it’s no accident. More than three-quarters of voters — 76 percent — think the emails missing from the account of Lois Lerner, the ex-IRS official at the center of the scandal over targeting of conservative groups, were deliberately destroyed.

That suspicion is shared across party lines, albeit to varying degrees. An overwhelming 90 percent of Republicans think the emails were intentionally destroyed, as do 74 percent of independents and 63 percent of Democrats.
Overall, just 12 percent of voters believe the emails were destroyed accidentally. Another 12 percent are unsure.

Obamacare average premium increase is 49%
Men really got screwed...
Via Forbes:
Via Forbes:
Across the country, for men overall, individual-market premiums went up in 91 percent of all counties: 2,844 out of 3,137. For 27-year-old men, the average county faced 91 percent increases; for 40-year-old men, 60 percent; for 64-year-old men, 32 percent.
Women fared slightly better; their premiums “only” went up in 82 percent of all counties: 2,562 out of 3,137. That’s because Obamacare bars insurers from charging different rates to men and women; prior to Obamacare, only 11 states did so. Because women tend to consume more health care than men, the end result of the Obamacare regulation is that men fare somewhat worse.
Relative to men, the average rate increase for women was less extreme: 44 percent for 27-year-olds; 23 percent for 40-year-olds; 42 percent for 64-year-olds. Read it all...

Here is why all of Lois Learner's email in the 1st half of 2011 should be available...
The IRS claims they can recover Lois Lerner's email from 2011 and earlier because Lerner's hard drive crashed and they only backed up for 6 months and then reused the data tapes. That seems to be a stupid explanation, but for the sake of this discussion, let's stretch credibility and assume the IRS and Lerner are completely truthful.
Prior to the eruption of the IRS controversy last spring, the IRS had a policy of backing up the data on its email server (which runs Microsoft Outlook) every day. It kept a backup of the records for six months on digital tape, according to a letter sent from the IRS to Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). After six months, the IRS would reuse those tapes for newer backups. So when Congressional committees began requesting emails from the agency, its records only went back to late 2012.
The IRS has described the missing e-mails as dating from 2009 to mid-2011. At that point, the agency says its computer system had a strict limit for the e-mail capacity of each employee’s account. If a worker went above that capacity, they had to either move e-mails to their hard drive or delete them. When Lois Lerner’s hard drive crashed in 2011, the agency states, her saved e-mails were lost from her account and computer.
The IRS provided e-mails from 2011 in which Lerner asked IT support staff for help with her broken hard drive and missing e-mails. The agency says it has recovered 24,000 of those e-mails by searching the accounts of 83 other IRS employees who corresponded with Lerner.
According to these emails, Lerner and the IRS took almost heroic efforts to recover Lerner's files.
Here is where the explanation falls apart for losing the 1st six months of Lerner's email. At the time of the Lerner hard drive crash in what appears to be early July of 2011, her email files for the 1st six months of 2011 would be backed up on data tape by the IRS own admission. There may have been other files on Lerner's computer that weren't backed up and were unrecoverable. Actually, since they didn't reuse the tapes for six months, the oldest back up tape likely had several months of email from the end of 2010 too. If Lerner asked them to restore those files, they should be on her new computer. If she didn't ask to have copies of them sent to her, why not? Didn't she want her email anymore? I would think those would be the files someone would most want back. If the IRS can't produce them, they are lying or Lenner didn't want her email back. I will leave the speculation as too why that might be to the reader.
Border Security Fail: 378 unaccompanied children ages two or younger crossed the border in the last 9 months
Border security is a joke. Until both political parties take border security seriously, immigration reform should be off the table.
Hundreds of infants and toddlers ages 2 years or younger have allegedly been apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol while crossing the border illegally without a parent or guardian in the past year.
From October 1, 2013 to June 11, Border Patrol detained 378 unaccompanied children ages two or younger, according to data obtained by Fusion from the office of a high-ranking Democratic senator. Of those children, 95 were infants under 1 year old.
Fusion tried multiple times by phone and in writing to confirm the reports with U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security, but no official would comment specifically, and instead referred to a previous statement. The Department of Health and Human Services, charged with the care of unaccompanied minors caught at the border, did not respond to a request for comment.

This occurred at the end of Bill Clinton's administration. Although the EPA was held in contempt by a judge, I don't think anyone was ever put in jail or punished in any way. The Obama IRS seems to be following EPA's example.
WASHINGTON — A federal judge held the Environmental Protection Agency in contempt yesterday for destroying computer files during the Clinton administration that had been sought by a conservative legal foundation.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth also ordered the EPA to pay the Landmark Legal Foundation’s legal fees and costs because the agency disobeyed his order to preserve the electronic records of former chief Carol Browner.
Lamberth ordered the sanctions because he said the EPA had shown “contumacious conduct” — obstinate resistance to authority.
“This is a major victory for those who believe the EPA has an obligation to comply with the law,” said Landmark President Mark Levin.
“The EPA destroyed vast databases that would have revealed the extent to which Carol Browner and other top officials worked with environmental groups to issue last-minute regulations prior to the end of the Clinton administration,” he said.
Lamberth declined to hold Browner, two other EPA officials and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in contempt.
Lamberth had issued a protective order on Jan. 19, 2001, the day before the Clinton administration ended, instructing the EPA to preserve all documents that might be relevant to a Freedom of Information Act request by Landmark for documents about the agency’s contacts with outside groups.
IRS canceled contract with email backup company after Congress started investigating targeting of conservatives...
Wow. The timing was also shortly after Lois Lerner's computer allegedly crashed. I believe this rises to the "smidgen of corruption" level.

The IRS signed a contract with Sonasoft, an email-archiving company based in San Jose, California, each year from 2005 to 2010. The company, which partners with Microsoft and counts The New York Times among its clients, claims in its company slogans that it provides “Email Archiving Done Right” and “Point-Click Recovery.” Sonasoft in 2009 tweeted, “If the IRS uses Sonasoft products to backup their servers why wouldn’t you choose them to protect your servers?”
Sonasoft was providing “automatic data processing” services for the IRS throughout the January 2009 to April 2011 period in which Lerner sent her missing emails.
But Sonasoft’s six-year business relationship with the IRS came to an abrupt end at the close of fiscal year 2011, as congressional investigators began looking into the IRS conservative targeting scandal and IRS employees’ computers started crashing left and right.

State Sen. Chris McDaniel up eight points on Sen. Thad Cochran
Thad Cochran should be careful to not let the door hit him in the arse on the way out.
PEARL, Mississippi — A new poll shows that state Sen. Chris McDaniel has surged even further ahead in the final days of his GOP primary runoff against Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), in what has become one of the most epic bouts to date between grassroots conservatives and the GOP establishment.McDaniel has taken a 52 percent to 44 percent lead over Cochran, while four percent of voters remain undecided in a new tracking poll by Chism Strategies. The poll, conducted on Friday night, surveyed 697 GOP primary voters and has a margin of error of 3.8 percent—a number McDaniel’s 8-point lead is well outside of.
Here is why Lois Lerner losing 2 years worth of email smells fishy!
We have been told Lois Lerner lost 2 years worth of emails due to a crash of her hard drive. We were told the disc had bad sectors and the data could not be recovered.
According to documents provided by the IRS, Lerner was archiving her e-mails on her local hard drive, which developed fatal problems (bad sectors) in the middle of June 2011. The data proved unrecoverable despite heroic efforts on the part of the IT staff.Let's delve into this a little deeper. Exactly what is a hard disc sector?
In computer disk storage, a sector is a subdivision of a track on a magnetic disk or optical disc. Each sector stores a fixed amount of user-accessible data, traditionally 512 bytes for hard drives and 2048 bytes for CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. Newer hard drives use 4096-byte (4 KB) sectors, known as the Advanced Format.A sector is about 4 kilobytes. I checked my email and small text only emails were 2 to 5 kilobytes. large emails or ones with attachments ran into the megabytes. So, if learner lost 1 sector, it would be about 1 small email. This is assuming Lerner had a very modern computer. If it was older, it would take more, about 8 sectors, to store an email. How many emails did Lerner lose?
We don't know exactly how many are missing because a) they are missing and b) the IRS has managed to retrieve 24,000 of the lost emails by searching through the accounts of dozens of other IRS employees who could have been included in those emails. It would appear that Lois Lerner was a prolific email user. If they lost as many as they recovered (24,000), then Lerner's hard drive would have had to have had as many as 48,000 bad sectors to store the lost emails (both lost and recovered) and this is assuming they are small emails without any attachments and all the bad sectors would have to be in the locations her emails were stored. If they were larger file sizes, the number of bad sectors needed to destroy that many emails rises dramatically. Of course all hard drives, even new ones, likely have some bad sectors. Windows stops writing to them after they are identified.
Overall, the IRS has turned over 750,000 pages of documents in the investigation, including 67,000 emails.
When your computer notices a bad sector, it marks that sector as bad and ignores it in the future. The sector will be reallocated, so reads and writes to that sector will go elsewhere. This will show up as “Reallocated Sectors” inhard drive S.M.A.R.T. analysis tools like CrystalDiskInfo. If you had important data in that sector, however, it may be lost — possibly corrupting one or more files. In order for Lerner to have lost two years of email, there would have had to be severe sudden damage to a large section of Lerner's hard drive because files are not stored in a linear manner on disc.
Each partition is either swap space (used to implement virtual memory) or a file system used to hold files. Swap-space partitions are just treated as a linear sequence of blocks. File systems, on the other hand, need a way to map file names to sequences of disk blocks. Because files grow, shrink, and change over time, a file's data blocks will not be a linear sequence but may be scattered all over its partition (from wherever the operating system can find a free block when it needs one). This scattering effect is called fragmentation. If the IRS claimed they lost a few of Lerner's emails due to disc errors, we might believe that, but two years worth doesn't seem very credible. I smell fish.
