Flashback: The Roots of Operation "Fast and Furious"

The most bizarre question about the U.S. Government selling weapons to Mexican drug cartels and allowing them to cross across the border is, "Why would a sane person do this?" The reason seems clear. President Obama and Eric Holder wanted to re-institute the ban on assault weapons, but they needed a justification the public would support. The strategy they chose was to use the possibility of U.S. assault weapons getting into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. Apparently this option wasn't panning out fast enough, so it appears they tried to help it along.

There are just a few gun related changes we would like to make and among them is to re-institute the ban on the sale of assault weapons. I think that would have a positive impact in Mexico at a minimum.
