During President Obama's immigration reform speech Thursday, he seemed to be saying our borders can not be secured.
"There are those who argue that we should not move forward with any other elements of reform until we have fully sealed our borders," he said. "Our borders are just too vast for us to be able to solve the problem only with fences and border patrols. It won't work."
The only way to secure our borders is with fences and border patrols. It is disingenuous to suggest immigration reform and banning employers from hiring illegals will help secure the borders. We tried this in 1986 and our borders are not more secure. Giving amnesty only encouraged others to hope for a new program in the future and there is little enthusiasm from either party for enforcing employer sanctions. Unless President Obama is willing to let anyone anywhere in the world move here, the only way to stop this is intervention at the border. Giving illegal immigrants currently here amnesty and starting a some kind of guest worker program won't prevent those who do not qualify from wanting to enter the U.S. The borders will never be secure if millions of people can cross them illegally every year.
